The fort Victor Emmanuel is located Aussois, in Savoie, 38 km east of Saint-Jean de Maurienne and 8 km northeast of Modane.
The building belongs to a group of fortifications called the barrier Esseillon on either side of the course of the Arc, consisting of four forts and a high redoubt between 1819 and 1834 to protect the Italian Piedmont and prevent French possible intrusions. They all bear the names of members of the royal family of Savoy.
The fort Victor Emmanuel is the largest of them and could house 1,500 men.
The buildings were built in rock slope. A unique example of its kind, the entire barrier Esseillon also has a parade, a chapel, bread ovens and a penitentiary.
