Petit-Caux is a coastal town of Seine-Maritime, in the Normandy region, east of Dieppe which it borders.
The community was created on January 1, 2016 following the merger of the 18 villages that formed the community of communes of Petit Caux, with reference to the name designating the small coastal area between Dieppe and Le Tréport. The new municipality includes Saint-Martin-en-Campagne, its capital, and Assigny, Auquemesnil, Belleville-sur-Mer, Berneval-le-Grand, Biville-sur-Mer, Bracquemont, Brunville, Derchigny, Glicourt, Gouchaupré, Greny, Guilmecourt, Intraville, Penly, Saint-Quentin-au-Bosc, Tocqueville-sur-Eu, Tourville-la-Chapelle.
The vast territory of Petit-Caux (91 km²) extends from the coast to the countryside, inland, between coastline formed by beaches or cliffs and grove. There are some 9,500 inhabitants, and in agriculture and fishing, there is an economy related to services and tourism, not to mention the Penly nuclear power plant commissioned in the 1990s.
The heritage and the green environment of Petit-Caux pleasant landscaping, not to mention the water sports, justify a step during a stay in Normandy.
During a long walk in the villages of the new town, several heritage and historic sites deserve special attention.
In terms of religious buildings, this is the case of the church of St. Severin and Peter Intraville, built in the sixteenth century, whose interior is home to a few statuettes of interest including a Saint Michael and stained glass of the twentieth, which represent Hairy of the First War.
In Saint-Martin-en-Campagne, the ancient foundations of the church are from the thirteenth century but the building was rebuilt in the sixteenth, such as the south nave. Note the sandstone portal of 1517. The tower was rebuilt in 1902 after being struck down, but it is still surmounted by a very high spire of the eighteenth. An explanatory leaflet is available for visitors.
In Berneval-le-Grand, the Notre-Dame church was very affected during the bombings of June 1944, like the whole of the locality. It was rebuilt after the war but a remarkable model of the old church dating from the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries is exposed at the entrance.
In Derchigny, the Romanesque church of Saint-Valéry still has some tufa stones dating from its origins (11th). Repeated several times, the building houses many statues including an exceptional Madonna and Child polychrome wood of the fifteenth century.
Finally, in Tocqueville-sur-Eu, the church of the Holy Trinity that belonged to the Abbey of Eu was built with various materials (bricks, flint, sandstone). The bell tower overcomes a square tower of the seventeenth century whose interior housed a porch whose bases date back to the fifteenth.
In terms of civil architecture, three buildings are worth a look at the village of Derchigny. The castle of the same name, first, built in the seventeenth century on the foundations of the former seigniorial residence. Part of the building and the park was dedicated to the hotel and catering in the twentieth century, but now owned by the town, the castle will be restored, retaining its former glory while hosting a center of residence.
On the hamlet of Graincourt, the half-timbered manor house built in the 18th century has been transformed into a guest house but its typical aspect of Anglo-Norman architecture has been carefully preserved. Finally, the castle of Wargemont rebuilt in the nineteenth century on the foundations of an 18th century building is famous for hosting a guest of honor, the painter Auguste Renoir. During his stays, from 1879 to 1885, the artist made some of the interior decorations of the dining room (hunting scenes).
Referring to memory tourism, two sites evoke tragedies of the Second World War. This is the case of the steles paying tribute to the Canadian and British soldiers killed during the "Jubilee" Operation in August 1942, who landed on the beaches near Berneval-le-Grand to try to destroy the German defenses and harbor structures.. The operation killed a thousand dead and 2,000 prisoners.
See also, the memorial erected on the cliffs of Berneval-le-Grand in tribute to the 420 French sailors who died after the liner Meknes was torpedoed by a German star on 24 July 1940 off the coast. 900 other sailors could be saved. The base of the monument is symbolically composed of 420 pebbles.
Most of these sites, the old hearts of the villages with their half-timbered houses of Anglo-Norman style, the coast with its beaches, its cliffs of the country of Caux with the appearance of immense sculptures and its valleys (paths cutting the cliffs to join the coast), protected for their ecological wealth, punctuate innumerable hiking trails or mountain bike according to landscapes that already delighted impressionist painters such as Renoir or Pissarro. On the cultural side, a visit to the museum of the history of everyday life in Saint-Martin-en-Campagne will reveal a collection of 1300 objects evoking the daily life of the early nineteenth and early twentieth century. The museum, housed in an old building (the Mercier House, aristocratic residence of the 16th century), extended by spaces with contemporary architecture, also hosts temporary exhibitions in season. Visits are free or guided and include "workshops" intended especially for young audiences. Closed from January 1st to mid-February. Entry: 4 and 5.50 euros. Information on +33 2 35 86 31 61.
To combine idleness and water sports, go to the pebble beach of Berneval-le-Grand popular with surfers and windsurfers. At low tide, the sand is discovered. Information on +33 2 35 06 05 40. In Saint-Martin-en-Campagne, the beach is monitored in summer and a channel allows boats to go offshore. Information on +33 2 35 83 62 29.
As for water sports, the Ludibulle swimming pool in Saint-Martin-en-Campagne has swimming pools, recreational equipment and a relaxation area. The resort also has an ice rink. Information on +33 2 35 85 84 84.
