Village of Hérault, Aumelas takes place in the district of Lodève, not far from Montbazin, Saint-Pargoire and Gignac, only around thirty kilometers from Montpellier.
Nestled in the heart of the scrubland, the one which was known as Omelares Castellum, Omellaz or Aumelaç, takes its name from the Gallo-Roman meaning "place planted with elms". Of very ancient origin, the town of Aumelas was built in the Middle Ages around a castle now in ruins.
Expanded at the end of the 18th century thanks to the absorption of the communes of Cardonnet and Cabrials, the village remains known for its wine-growing activity. The richness of its architectural heritage also makes it a popular place for passing tourists.
