Commune of Sarthe, Pays de la Loire region, Aubigné-Racan takes place between the Loir and the forest, about forty kilometers from Le Mans and its remains Plantagenet. Located in Haut-Anjou, it is about sixty kilometers from the charming city of Tours.
Occupied by man since the Neolithic period, the territory of Aubigné-Racan developed during Roman Antiquity. Important center at the time, the town develops in the Middle Ages, becoming a dependency of the Angevin County of Lude. In the nineteenth century, Aubigné-Racan was known for its mineralogical activity, including the extraction of limestone and clay.
Always appreciated by visitors for its location and charm, the city of Aubigné-Racan also has an important architectural heritage to discover the time of a stay in the area.
Hometown of the poet Racan, the manor Champmarin was built between the fifteenth and sixteenth century and strongly modified in the nineteenth. Partially listed as a Historical Monument, it consists of a single main building of the First Renaissance. Outside, it is possible to admire the remains of two towers framing a chapel.
The Saint-Martin-de-Vertou church dates back to the 12th century. It has undergone several changes in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, and is now listed as a Historic Monument for its high relief, carved group and pulpit preaching of the seventeenth century, and for its eighteenth century lectern. It reveals a charming Romanesque style and typical architecture of the region.
While strolling in the commune and its surroundings, do not miss the mill of Cherré of the XVIIe century, the castle of Bossé, or the prehistoric vestiges like the dolmen of Pierre, the menhir of the castle of Bossé, the Covered alley of the Colombier, or the neolithic necropolis of Cherré.
The archaeological site of Cherré does not miss any interest with the remains of its theater listed Historical Monuments. Dating from the 1st to the 3rd century, it allows you to browse the ancient ruins and enjoy explanations on these unique remains.
The camp of Eperon de Vaux with its enclosure and its habitat of the Neolithic, and the castle of Gennevraye complete the tourist offer of this very dynamic commune. Several hiking trails allow to discover this heritage, and it is also possible to enjoy the banks of the Loir.
