The very dynamic village of Attignéville is nestled between the meanders of the Vair and at the foot of the Potelon limestone plateau.
Located in a valley near the Vair valley, the town is 13 km from Neufchâteau and 61 km from Épinal. While the altitude of the village exceeds just 300 meters, it rises towards the north where the territory is divided between polyculture and the large forest of Attignéville which extends into Meurthe-et-Moselle.
On the south side, it is the Vair which separates the town from its neighbours, Houéville and Barville.
The village, called Alteniaci villa, Autignevilla or Autignéville, was part of the barony of Châtelet. In 1594 it depended on the bailiwick of Nancy.
Having passed into the bailiwick of Neufchâteau, it had several lords in 1711, including the Bassompierres and the chapter of Remiremont. The high, medium and low justice at the ban of Attignéville belonged half to the vowed and half to the small chancellor of the church of Saint-Pierre de Remiremont. There was a chapel of Notre-Dame-de-Pitié, founded on June 17, 1775 by Élophe Jâquet d'Haroué.
From 1790 to the year IX, Attignéville was part of the canton of Vouxey, in the district of Neufchâteau.
