The small town of Argenton-sur-Creuse, known as the Venice of Berry, is very picturesque with typical old houses with galleries and balustrades reflected in the water of the Creuse river. The best places to admire this beautiful scene are the old bridge over the river or the terrace of Bonne-Dame chapel perched on the hillside above, where the view over the rooftops and valley is stunning. Don't miss visiting the town itself for its pretty streets and lanes like Rue Raspail, Saint-Sauveur church flanked by a Neo-Gothic bell tower porch and the museum of shirt-making and male elegance (Musée de la Chemiserie et de l'Elégance Masculine).

Additional information
Argenton-sur-Creuse

Argenton-sur-Creuse, tourist center of the Creuse Valley, succeeded the Gallo-Roman city of Argentomagus in Saint-Marcel.

A former fortified town, it has evolved over the ages to become a welcoming and dynamic little town, where the modernity of the districts harmonizes with the authenticity of the old districts of the Middle Ages.

We can still admire today some beautiful medieval houses, old houses with galleries and balustrades framed with copper and slate gray roofs.

This picturesque village of Berry, nicknamed "the Venice of Berry", has inspired many poets and writers.

Things to see and do

Do not miss strolling on the banks of the Creuse, along the mills. For the more athletic, you must go see the Good Lady, the climb of the stairs is really worth the detour. The Saint-Benoît chapel often houses exhibitions and its bell tower in chestnut wood is sumptuous.

There is also the Saint-Sauveur church and its remarkable organ in the city center. But one cannot speak of the green Venice of Berry without evoking the houses with galleries on the edge of the Creuse visible from the old bridge, recently restored.

There is the greenway that crosses Argenton, perfect for walks or bike rides, either to Blanc on one side or to La Châtre on the other.

Numerous hiking trails for all levels will allow you to discover or rediscover this beautiful valley.

3 museums in the area: the Argentomagus museum and its Gallo-Roman site, the shirtmaking and male elegance museum with its industrial past in the city, and the Creuse valley museum which talks about the traditional trades of the valley.

Markets, Tuesday and Saturday mornings, bring life to the city center.
