Castle Art Nouveau style, Valmy Castle takes place on the heights of Argelès-sur-Mer, in the department of Pyrénées-Orientales. The building was built in the late nineteenth century by Danish architect Viggo Dorph-Petersen and features typical Belle Epoque architecture.
This grand mansion reveals extravagant dimensions and is considered one of the first private buildings built from a reinforced concrete frame. Formerly owned by a rich Peruvian industrialist who developed the JOB cigarette paper brand, Valmy Castle became in the first half of the 20th century an important wine estate. The wine is still produced in this area of twenty-four hectares and now offers bed and breakfast and a restaurant offering a unique panorama ranging from Albères to the Mediterranean.
The site, which hosts the famous Les Déferlantes music festival every July, is appreciated for its elaborate bell-turrets, turrets, long, asymmetrical windows and floral ceramic medallions that offer an interesting mix of styles.
