The chapel of the Garoupe is located on a plateau overlooking the cape of Antibes and the city. A place of worship was built there from Antiquity.
The current building comprises a set of three buildings: a tower, the Notre-Dame de la Garde chapel and the Sainte-Hélène chapel. The tower is the oldest (15th century) then the Notre-Dame chapel was built after a donation made in 1520 by the co-lord of Antibes to the address of the Franciscan fathers serving the site. Finally, the chapel of Saint Helena was built. Initially contiguous but distinct, the chapels were united thanks to a porch (hence the common name of chapel of the Garoupe).
The whole has two naves. The first is adorned with a fresco made in 1948 by the painter Édouard Collin. The main nave is decorated with a fresco painted by Jacques-Henri Clergues in 1952 which notably evokes the stopover of Pope Gregory XI at Antibes in 1376.
The altarpiece of the choir is signed by the master sculptor Joseph Dolle.
Listed in the Inventory, the building is known to house many ex-votos (especially in the form of model ships). Adding to the charm of the place, it adjoins an oratory imagined by the artist Raymond Peynet (who lived in the region) called "Our Lady of Lovers protecting homes".
On this picturesque Garoupe plateau which is accessed by a road or a steep path called the Calvary, are also located a lighthouse and a semaphore, a wooded plot, and an orientation table to better enjoy the a breathtaking view of the coast, the land and the sea…
The whole has been carefully restored (chapels and surroundings).
