The Château du Jonchay is located in the town of Anse, in the Rhône department, 28 km north of Lyon.
The building is located to the west of the town, in the Saône valley.
It was the seat of a seigniory known for its swamps and rushes (hence its name), whose first known owner was Jean Richard de Saint-Priest in 1326.
Several noble families then succeeded at the head of the stronghold and in 1782, the estate was acquired by Dieudonné Sarton who would become president treasurer of France at the finance office of Lyon. His distant descendants still occupied the castle at the turn of the 21st century.
Architecturally, the current building dates from the 17th century. The three-storey main building (including the second floor which forms the attic) is rectangular in shape and is framed by two projecting square turrets. Note that the roof covered with tiles of the house is hidden by a balustrade while the turrets are covered with slates. Finally, the beautifully crafted facade is pierced with rectangular bays and in the center, a triangular pediment adds to the charm of the site. Outbuildings form a courtyard and a beautiful dovecote with pavilion completes the set.
