The town of Angoulins-sur-Mer is located in the department of Charente-Maritime. Its privileged location on the coast bordering the Atlantic Ocean, about 10 km from the city of La Rochelle, making it a kind destination par excellence.
The etymology of the city name reflects a history. The name "angoulins" takes its origin from the Gallic word "golènes", which meant little pool or pond. Angoulins was a city overlooking a vast expanse of marshes facing the ocean. The name "golènes" has evolved over time to become Ingolis or Ingolinis to 928, 1329 and finally to Angolins Angoulins around 1621.
In the twentieth century, lived mainly Angoulins salt marshes, operated until 1956. They then give way to marsh oyster, one of the main activities of the town to this day.
Angoulins invites you to discover its natural and cultural heritage. The town has many natural sites such as the foreshore or the beach Platere but also cultural highlights to visit, as the town center and the countryside, which can be admired through walking trails and bike paths.
Angoulins-sur-Mer is an ideal destination for family holidays, with friends or as a couple. Located along the Atlantic Ocean, the town is full of activities geared towards the sea.
We can especially relax at the beach Platere, try sailing the nautical center, visit the unique sites of the foreshore or to learn about the fishing net, the common fishing jetty operated by the nautical center of the city. One can also have a picnic or just walk there.
You can also discover the Loiron port or the tip of the Chay, magnificent limestone cliff with a breathtaking panorama.
Angoulins has a pristine coastline that can be admired via hiking trails and marked bike paths. Interpretation of the terminals present the cultural and natural treasures of the town.
Discover oyster farming in the town by visiting the salt marshes. The city also has soft marsh with lock houses. Located along coastline, these homes were intended to regulate the water in the marshes for cultivation, fallow land and pastures.
The city also has a remarkable architectural heritage, with some old houses of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, fortified farms and winding streets. One can also admire the church of Saint Pierre-es-Link, restored in the nineteenth century listed building January 2, 1908.
Angoulins is also a dynamic town, many shops, a commercial area, artisans and oyster farmers who can discover local specialties such as the famous slippers oysters.
The city also has an equestrian center.
The market in the hall of Angoulins-sur-Mer takes place on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday off season and daily from 8 am to 12.30 in July and August. In particular you can enjoy oysters, shellfish and fish caught on the Charente coast.
During the summer, the tourist office of Angoulins organizes once a week a tour of the town center, and a tour of the oyster places.
Angoulins also offers night markets in July and August on the church square and all local markets throughout the year.
In autumn, the La Rochelle Urban Community of organizing a jazz festival with an evening offered to Angoulins.
