Located halfway between Angers and Nantes, in the country to which it gave its name, Ancenis is a town in Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire. Very old, the city was built in 984 on an island, there are still some remains. Full member of the famous Brittany Marches, Ancenis is now a rich cultural and historical heritage of the most interesting, and in particular the beautiful castle.

Tour mainly to tourism, the city of Ancenis also has a large wine business with plunging hillside vineyards in the Loire Valley, like the Cabernet, the malvoisies or of Muscadet and Gamay.

Crossed by the Loire, the city of Ancenis offers to visitors a very beautiful landscape and an important natural heritage, some sites are known to practice bird watching.

Things to see and do

Ancient medieval city, full of Ancenis today one of the largest assets, including no less than three ranked sites and two sites listed historical monument.

Classified as an historic monument, Ancenis Castle was built on an ancient castle mound in 984. Located along the Loire, its strategic position has won many seats between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. Partially destroyed in the fifteenth century by Anne de Bretagne, he finds his glory around the sixteenth century, although the moats were filled in 1840. Today, one can still admire the walls and a beautiful Renaissance house recently restored.

Former convent established by the Ursulines in the seventeenth century, the Ursuline Convent, also called Rohan district, is a classic building. He welcomed girls from all backgrounds, before being transformed into a military hospital in the late eighteenth century. The convent was listed historic monument early 1990. The chapel serves as an art gallery.

Listed historical monument, the dolmen of Pierre Couvretière is a megalith dating from the fourth millennium BC It is a monument that has uncovered numerous archaeological materials.

Walking through Ancenis, it is possible to admire high quality buildings such as the villa of Douvelière, a neoclassical house on the banks of the Loire, architectural halls Napoleon III and topped with a belfry, the town hall, also of Napoleon III style, or a statue of Joachim du Bellay.

The natural heritage of the city of Ancenis is also particularly rich, thanks to the presence of several islands on the Loire. One can thus take the hiking trails of islands Mouchet and Delage. On these sites, playgrounds, or trail accessible to disabled people have also been installed. Located east of the city, the marshes of Gree extends over 450 hectares with fauna and flora of the most interesting. These include a very important ornithological site.

Events and festivities

The Ancenis market is held twice a week, Thursday morning and Saturday morning. The Ascension, the city also hosts the Ascension market with more than 350 merchants and an attic.

In March, the site dedicated to the film festival 11-18 years Clap Loire. It takes place every year at the Eden cinema, with screenings and meetings in the program.

Since late November, celebrates Christmas Ancenis, with the installation of an ice rink, organizing a march to traditional lanterns, or different animations as street performances.
