Rural village of the mountains of Ambazac, the town of Ambazac takes place in Haute-Vienne, in the region of New Aquitaine. It is located twenty kilometers from Limoges, not far from Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat or the municipality of Nantiat.
Nicknamed Ambaciaco in the Merovingian period, the town takes place at this time about ten kilometers from the abbey of Grandmont. Long turned towards agriculture and livestock, it sees its economy change in the middle of the twentieth century with the discovery of large deposits of uranium. These are now mined or quarried.
Ideally located in the heart of a preserved nature and full of resources, the municipality of Ambazac also benefits from an important architectural and cultural heritage which reveals all the wealth of the city over the centuries.
Built in the 14th century, the Saint-Antoine church houses the treasure of Ambazac, two of which come straight from the abbey of Grandmont: the shrine-reliquary of Saint Etienne de Muret, and the Dalmatic Saint Etienne of Muret.
Do not miss to discover the castle of Montméry, home of the nineteenth century built for the porcelain Theodore Haviland and now owned by a former car racer. The house was particularly illustrated by serving as a backdrop for many scenes of the movie Lady Chatterley, in 2005. Housed in the park of the castle, the chalet Montméry, built at the same time, is the old nursery castle. Listed in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments, it takes place on the footmonts of Mount Gerbassou, offering a breathtaking view of the castle and the surrounding landscapes.
The dolmen of the Bois de la Lieue is an ancient monument classified as an historic monument. It probably dates from the Neolithic era.
Several ponds take place on the town of Ambazac like those of the monks of Grandmont, or Jonah, offering some beautiful places to walk.
In the village, you can also admire the chapel Notre-Dame-de-la-Liberation, the castle of Ribagnac of the fourteenth century, the Celtic oppidum nicknamed The camp of Caesar, or the ancient medieval windmills of Nouaillas.
Ambazac also has a museum of mineralogy, with an important space dedicated to the photographer Izis, a Lithuanian artist known for being one of the main representatives of the Parisian humanist photography.
Listed as a historic monument, the Coudier barn dates from the 12th century and once belonged to the Grandmont Abbey. It now hosts shows and concerts.
The market is held every Friday morning.
In June, the town hosts a carnival with various activities.
