At the heart of the high valley of the Vis, near Mont Saint-Guiral (1365 m), in an area where meet limestone, granite and schist, Alzon enjoys a privileged position. Place of stage, the village marks the entry in territory viganais for which arrives of Larzac by the old road of Aix to Montauban. Preserved damage of an uncontrolled urbanism, it preserved its typical streets and for a large part, its old facades. Its small heritage has been rehabilitated and enhanced thanks to the Plan Patrimoine Emploi. Part of the town is located in the heart of the Cévennes National Park.
An association and exchanges maintain the friendship with the Chatham Islands (New Zealand) since Alzon has the particularity of being the only place of France which corresponds to a land inhabited to the antipodes.
