Former fortified house, the Château du Champ in Altier takes place in the heart of the Cévennes National Park, in the former region of Gévaudan. Originally built in the 13th century, it underwent many transformations in the 15th and then in the 18th century.
Built on a rocky promontory enclosing the river Altier, the Château du Champ today benefits from a classification as a Historic Monument, while its facades, its roofs and its park are listed in the supplementary inventory. It consists of a single massive three-storey building, surrounded by pepper towers.
Under restoration since the 1980s, it is open to visitors every year during European Heritage Days.
