Albiez-Montrond is an authentic mountain village, located 1 hour from Chambéry, above Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
Formerly split into two municipalities, Albiez le Vieux and Montrond met in 1972 to form the commune called Albiez-Montrond.
The ski resort which developed since the 1950s on the territory of the municipality of Albiez le Vieux, is marketed under the name "Albiez" and comprises three communes, Albiez le Jeune located in the north, Albiez le Vieux Center and Montrond in the south.
In the heart of the mountains, the place and its villages are a haven of tranquility to recharge and enjoy the fantastic scenery. At the same time very close to the mountain, this vast moraine plateau 12 km long and 3 km wide, notched by torrents, offers a pleasant feeling of freedom and a panoramic view on all the surrounding massifs.
Composed of several villages, the municipality extends from Gevoudaz to 753 m altitude to Mollard at 1616 m and Chalmieu at 1580 m altitude, the latter counted up to 240 inhabitants in 1875.
Literally clinging to the alpine pastures, we sometimes wonder what motivated the men of the Neolithic age to settle here in the mountains (many traces of ancient occupation from the Iron Age - around 500 BC - Including collapsed tombs containing bronze pins, bracelets, fibulae and amber grains).
Located in Maurienne, in the heart of the Savoie, the commune of Albiez-Montrond is dominated in the East by Mount Emy (2797 m) and the crest that leads to the superb Aiguilles d'Arves in the South-East at 3514 m.
Today, the population of Albiez-Montrond is close to 400 inhabitants, it has been growing since 1972. Tourism and milk production for the Beaufort PDO production at the dairy cooperative of the valley of the Arves, rewarded Many times in the agricultural competition of Paris, are the two main economic activities of the commune.
If you wish, you will be able to attend alpine milking in the summer, thanks to the mobile milking facilities, milking is carried out as close to the pasture. Pulled by a tractor, it allows to install the equipment necessary to the milking in the meadows of altitude and to move it progressively as the animals rise. The milk was then lowered into 4x4s and then transported every morning to the cooperative of St Sorlin.
The schools of the villages of La Villette and Chalmieu closed in the 70s and 80s, they have become rural lodgings, including that of La Villette is open all the year and proposes a quality restoration with local products. The children of school age go to primary school at the new school of Albiez, it welcomes fifty children.
The climate is characterized by an excellent sunshine, 1973 h / year, a long snowfall (almost 6 months), low rainfall, 960 mm / year, and finally an exceptional brightness. The sky of the plateau of Albiez-Montrond is often called Mediterranean.
In the past, these advantages have made it the corn-country of the whole Arvan country (named after the torrent that originates at the foot of the St Sorlin glacier before throwing itself into the Arc) and the wheat gilds its ears Up to an altitude of 1,600 meters.
