Cited from the beginning of the 12th century, the Saint-Barthélemy de Bauzens church in Ajat is a fine example of Romanesque architecture. Considered one of the oldest churches in Périgord, it reveals an incredible nave, part of which is open to the sky. Visitors can admire small columns with sculptures of animals, branches or scallops.
Classified as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Barthélemy church in Bauzens was originally attached to the Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens abbey in Tourtoirac. Entirely covered with slate tiles, it is accessible via a portal with three arches separated by small columns. Inside, it is possible to discover a triumphal arch separating the nave from the choir and raised by a wall pinnacle with a single bay.
Finished with a flat apse, the church also presents a wooden altarpiece with a painting representing Jesus on the cross.
