Originally a Romanesque building from the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century, the Sainte-Quitterie d'Aire church is located on Mas hill, in the town of Aire-sur-l'Adour. Today in Gothic style, it was profoundly modified between the 13th and 14th centuries.
Classified as a Historic Monument and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the roads to Santiago de Compostela, the Sainte-Quitterie church in Aire was built on the remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to March.
Visitors will be able to admire a very beautiful Gothic portal with a trumeau and a tympanum with Christ in Majesty surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint John.
Inside, the choir reveals beautiful Romanesque arches with sculpted capitals. It is also possible to see the tomb of Saint Quitterie, a white marble sarcophagus of Saint Beatus decorated with sculptures dating back to the 4th or 5th century. The latter presents on its facade, its lid and its aisles sculptures of scenes from the Old and New Testaments.
