The Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church is located in the commune of Aigrefeuille-sur-Maine, in the Loire-Atlantique department, 20 km southeast of Nantes.
It was built from 1897 to 1900 in the center of the town, according to plans by the architect François Bougoüin. Of imposing size, it displays a resolutely flamboyant neo-Gothic architectural style, a reference which will also be that of the glass roofs, installed in the 1920s and created by the master Dragant, from Bordeaux. The beautifully crafted stained glass windows were restored in 2001.
The centrally planned church includes the marks imposed by the style, particularly at the level of the bell tower and the transept. The building listed in the Inventory has the specificity of housing at the level of the north chapel of the choir an imposing war memorial dedicated to the victims who fell on the Field of Honor during the First War. It includes a statue of Joan of Arc 1.55 m high. In addition to the plaques bearing the names of the deceased, it is lit by stained glass windows evoking the life of the Poilus in the trenches.
Also to be seen inside is a large altar in white marble (19th century), a baptismal font in gray marble from the 18th century from the previous church, an old preaching pulpit with oak panels carved by Pierre Malet (1820), an 18th century monstrance classified as an object and organs from the end of the 19th century.
This beautiful example of religious heritage in a rural environment can mark a walk in this town which also has an interesting 19th century chapel.
