The castle of Agonac is located in the town of the same name, in the Dordogne department, 15 km north of Périgueux.
Located within the town, overlooking the course of the Beauronne, it was originally a fortified castle erected by Frotaire de Gourdon, bishop of Périgueux in the 10th century. What is then only a castrum on the edge of the cliff which is intended to defend the city of Périgueux against the Normans.
Over the centuries, fortified houses and lairs were built inside the enclosure. There is still a 17th century manor with a staircase tower and an 18th century dwelling which forms a courtyard with its outbuildings.
Besieged on numerous occasions, notably during the Hundred Years War, integrated into other constructions, the castle itself, only part of the 12th century keep remains today, built in stone from size according to a rectangular plan, remains of the enclosure, and a room with two naves vaulted in broken cradle of the beginning of the 13th century. It is probably the old castle chapel.
The other elements were altered several times until the 19th century, when the castle was seized and sold as national property during the Revolution.
Protected as historical monuments, the site is still private. This old stronghold can be observed during a walk in this village which preserves other elements of heritage of character.
