Second city in the Urban Community of Arras, with almost 8,000 inhabitants, Achicourt is located south of Arras. The inhabitants of the commune are called Achicouriens and Achicouriennes.
Through its former market gardening vocation, Achicourt has managed to keep its identity with La Bassure and Le Pré, natural preservation zones which also function as hydrometric buffers for the Crinchon stream during heavy rains. These spaces are also used during events and by walkers.
She also keeps a link with her “railway worker” history.
The reconstruction of the La Tourelle Windmill on its original site recalls the existence of numerous mills in the area.
Since 1361, on the hill of Caumont, where the current La Tourelle mill is located, there have been several wooden pivot mills. In 1804, a tower mill was built there. Oil mill, then flour mill around 1840, it ceased its activity because it was destroyed in 1914. Since then, the La Tourelle mill has been rebuilt identical to its ancestor the Hacart mill, between 1991 and 1994, thanks to the wishes of the Municipality. Inaugurated on October 1, 1994, the mill is the emblem of the city. It continues to produce flour and thus perpetuates the tradition of ancestral know-how and profession: miller.
