The Royal Château of Saint Saturnin was built in the xiiith century by the La Tour d'Auvergne family who established itself on this estate in 1281. The château dominates the medieval village of Saint Saturnin -which belongs to theAssociation of the Most Beautiful Villages of France-, and faces directly onto its Romanesque church. It has in its time been the property of both Queen Catherine de Medicis and Queen Marguerite de Valois, and also of King Louis xiii. A perfect example of a large medieval château carefully restored, this imposing fortress is a fine example of the military architecture of the Middle âges with its moat, ramparts, battlements, fortified towers and machicolation. It was continually enlarged and embellished up until the ebd of the XVth century under the influence of the Renaissance. Thr park and its regular gardens are currently being restored and are encircled by the beautiful hills of th Regional Park known as The Volcanic Park of the Auvergne. The Royal Château de Saint Saturnin is a member of Châteaux et Hôtels Collection. It has five charming guest rooms which have been created within the oldest part of the château, enjoying astonishing views to the court of honnor and the village church, or to the gardens and the surrounding Natural Park.
