La terre d'or

I can't say enough about Vincent, Fabrizio and Jean-Louis as great hosts. From the time Vincent picked us up at the train station and dropped us off four days later it couldn't have been better. Vincent took us on a tour the first day and Fabrizio the second day driving around the vineyards and visiting some wineries. The last day Jean-Louis took me to a small winery and watched how they crushed the grapes. I absolutely would highly recommend this place.

We stayed at La Terre D'Or for four nights in mid to late October. Vincent is an incredible host, we met Jean-Louis and crushed some grapes with him at their family vineyard and truffle farm, met Vincent's mother late in the afternoon in Pommard and met Fabrizzio on our last day in Beaune - what an incredible family and team. The house is well laid out, the bedrooms very comfortable, the garden is beautiful, especially with the people-sculptures in unexpected places, and what they have done with their grotto is amazing, there is no better way to understand the geology of the Cote D'Or. The property is perched on a hill facing east, just like the vineyards below and to each side of the place, with views that change with the time and the weather. But the real treasure is Vincent and his incomparable hospitality coupled with his knowledge of the region and its wine. We had a really great time and it could not have been better, thank you Vincent and your family, and Fabrizzio, for making our stay so memorable.

My wife and I stayed at La Terre d'Or from September 19th to the 23rd, 2019. From the moment Fabrizio picked us up at the train station, we knew we were in capable hands. Our stay was booked through a third-party tour company and included a number of tours with our guide Fabrizio, which are also available to those booking directly through La Terre d'Or. I had seen the photographs of this elevated Bed and Breakfast on the website, and can confidently say that photos do not do it justice ; the beautiful grounds, the comfortable and pristine rooms, and the breathtaking view of nearby Beaune and the expanses of vineyards climbing the slopes toward us was simply sublime. We stayed in Les Orchidées room, which was bright, clean, and ever so spacious after our cramped hotel room in Paris. Our room included a small terrace outside our door where my wife and I loved to wind down the day with a bottle of wine. The cave below the house is stocked with local Burgundy wine offerings and bottles can be purchased directly from La Terre d'Or at very reasonable prices. Our days were spent with Fabrizio, touring local wineries, talking with winemakers, and sampling some of the best wine produced in the world. We also had opportunity to tour local treasures like the Beaune market, l'Hospice de Beaune, and the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot. More than anything, La Terre d'Or offers some of the warmest hospitality we've ever experienced in our travels. The time we spent talking and laughing with Fabrizio, Vincent, and family patriarch, Jean-Louis will stay with us forever. Fabrizio was so kind to make our wedding anniversary that much more special by preparing homemade treats and a home-cooked dinner for us. Jean-Louis hosted us at “Le Clos”, his nearby property with vineyards, gardens, and a soon to be fruitful truffle plantation. Before showing us around, he opened a bottle of wine produced from the vineyard we were about to explore. One evening, while seated on our terrace, Vincent came to visit us with a plate of local cheeses and cured meats. We supped, snacked, and laughed, talking about life as the sun went down on another perfect day. We were so sad to leave our new friends at the end of our time at this special place, but our memories will sustain us, until circumstances bring about our return.

We visited during the off season, so we were the only people in the house during our stay. Because of that, Vincent and his gang upgraded our room with the explanation, “well someone has to use it ! ” One might think breakfast would be awkward with it just being us, but it wasn'T. They put out baked good, cheese, fresh orange juice, yogurt and baguettes, always encouraging us to try new things. Which we did ! And when Vincent discovered that my husband was a fan of pain au chocolate, he made sure to always have more. We also did the private tour with Vincent of the cote de Beaune region. He drove us around in his newly purchased van. He explained the history of th Burgundy wine region which was fascinating. He also took us to three local producers for tasting. All tastings were so pleasant and I got to practice my limited French which I'm normally too shy to do. We also had a wonderful lunch for a steal of a price compared to Paris. I know that the price for the tour can come across as steep to some people, but if you compare it to the half day bus tours it really isn't that much more. But the real reason you should do it, is that you get to meet real French people. Each tasting was also a social hour for Vincent and the people we were interacting with, so by extension, a social hour for as well. The city of Beaune is so cute with great architecture and so many winding roads. Terre D'Or is a lovely home with great rooms and good breakfast. But it is Vincent and his family that make this place truly great ! They are your host, not hotel manager, so that chatting you do is not forced. He so clearly loves what he does and where he lives. When you drive away, it'll be evident that you have absorbed some of this passion.
